A group of middle school students from Pinecrest Academy Space Coast are set to test whether horseshoe crab blood can detect bacterial contamination in microgravity. The test will take place on the International Space Station National Lab. The students, nicknamed the "Bacteria Boys", designed their investigation as part of the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program Mission 17. The test involves the use of Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL), a component in horseshoe crab blood, which is already used on Earth to screen vaccines and medical treatments for bacterial contaminants. If successful, this could have significant implications for space travel, with the potential to detect contamination on board spaceships. The students will watch the launch of their experiment, due to take place on SpaceX CRS-29, from Kennedy Space Center.
