MIAMI (February 21, 2013) — Along chart topping hit records and worldwide fame, recording superstar Pitbull now has a one-of-a-kind charter school under his wing. That school is SLAM — the Sports Leadership And Management Charter Middle and High School scheduled to open in Miami in August 2013. Pitbull’s support and involvement in SLAM is a big part of his continued commitment to his hometown.
On Friday, February 22, 2013, a segment featuring Pitbull and SLAM will air on the Today Show (NBC).
During a recent shoot in Miami for the Today Show, Miami native Pitbull toured SLAM, which is currently under construction just blocks away from the Marlins Ballpark. Once completed, the 8-story facility will have the capacity for 1,000 students and a penthouse gymnasium with spectacular views of Miami’s downtown as well as the Marlins Ballpark.
The SLAM program is geared toward students who want to attend college and major in a sports-related field. The tuition-free public charter school will use an innovative curriculum that will embed sports-related content into middle and high school courses and special projects, along with elective classes and guest lecturers. Three educational strands for students desiring careers in the sports industry will be offered: 1) sports medicine, health, fitness, and nutrition; 2) sports journalism, broadcasting, and marketing; and 3) sports management, law, and logistics.
SLAM is part of the Mater Academy family of high quality public charter schools. Mater Academy, Inc. is a non-profit educational organization that has been designated a “high performing charter school network” by the Florida Department of Education. Mater Academy schools have been recognized nationally for achieving exemplary academic results serving minority and disadvantaged students.
Following the Miami launch of SLAM, the educational program will be established in major cities across the country in the coming years. SLAM will also offer an affiliated online program. For more information, visit www.SLAMcharterhigh.com
